Urinary stones or nephrolithiasis are solid crystals made of minerals and salts.
First, kidney stones form inside the kidneys in renal papillae or calyces.
On the other hand, kidney stones can move into the ureters and get stuck causing severe pain, blood in the urine and other symptoms. If the stones are formed inside the bladder, it is called bladder stones which usually develop due to urinary problems.
The following are the four most common types:
This develops when calcium and oxalate in the urine combine. Intake of oxalate-rich foods such as nuts, chocolates, spinach, and raspberries increases this stone formation.
This forms due to a urinary tract infection. It can grow larger faster than other types with few warning signs.
Too much uric acid increases the risk of uric acid stone formation. This is due to high-protein diets, diabetes, and malabsorption.
Cystinuria, a hereditary disorder causing kidneys to form excessive cystine, leads to the formation of cystine stones.
Although most stones in the kidneys do not cause symptoms, some may migrate into the ureters, bladder or urethra and cause symptoms which include:
Sensation of needing to urinate more often and other urinary symptoms
Smelly or cloudy urine
Loin and abdominal pain
Pain when urinating
Blood in urine
Chills and fever
An evaluation of family history, symptoms, and physical condition with the following diagnostic tests supports the detection of kidney stones:
A blood test detects abnormal amounts of calcium or uric acid in the blood.
Urine collections for over 24 hours to identify if the urine consists of abnormal levels of stone-forming minerals such as calcium, oxalates, and uric acids.
Although X-rays can detect large stones, the most common one used to locate stones is CT (Computerised Tomography), which can reveal even small ones.
This test requires patients to urinate through a strainer to catch stones they pass. This allows a Urologist to identify the stone’s composition and determine a specific treatment plan.
Some smaller kidney stones do pass naturally but it may take some time.
However, the longer it stays in the urinary tract, the higher the risk of severe pain or kidney infection. For example, kidney stones may move and block the ureter, a part of the urinary tract that connects the kidneys to the bladder.
As a result, these stones may block urine flow, causing kidney swelling and painful ureter spasms. If left untreated, obstruction to urine flow leads to bacteria build-up, which may cause a kidney infection, and in rare cases, kidney damage.
